FRENCH CLUB

A reunion of the Cercle Francais was held on Thursday night, Mesdanies Herd and Finlayson and Miss L. Van Staveren providing the programme, which was varied and interesting. It began with an excellent eauserie on "La Societe francaise au temps de Louis Quatorze," by Madame Herd. The speaker dealt with the character of - the King, life at court and among the people; she spoke entirely without notes and was listened to with close attention. Madame Finlayson gave much pleasure with a recitatitfn from Francois Coppee. Musical items were supplied by Miss Rubinstein (piano) and Miss Bennie and Mr. Xelson, who sang, accompanied by Miss Hirst. Their numbers were much appreciated. The last part of the evening was filled with the amusing playlet "Les Coteaux du Medoc,' which caused much laHghter. It is a considerable time since it was first produced at the club, and its original success was repeated. The roles were rilled by Miss Lina Van Staveren, Professor Boyd*.Wilson (who played his old part), and Mr. Keys. Miss Van Staveren was herself responsible for this production, and is to be congratulated upon her success as "L'lnconnue" and a pleasing presentation of the play. The plot turns upon a lengthy conversation by telephone, and the lively ringing of the two instruments diverted the audience almost as much as the conversations themselves. Madame Bendall conducted the Conversation Circle, and Miss Young received.
