HARD WORK.
Dad put the new-chum on sinking strainer holes 3ft deep. Later in the day he went to see how the work was getting on. He found the new hand with hat and coat off, using bar and spade with feverish haste. "Here!" said Dad; "what's all this. Didn't I tell you to take your time?" "Well, boss," explained the new-chum, "the deeper I go the harder the ground gets; and I want to put this hole down before it gets too hard."
