LOCAL AND GENERAL

A number of items of general and special interest appear on the Public Works Estimates for the current year,, presented in the House of Kepresentatives this morning with the Public Works Statement. Provision is made for the payment of £32.500 by way of subsidy to the purchase of additional land taken at the coiner of Lambton quay and Bowen street, where the Wellington. Citizens' War Memorial is being erected. Last year a vote of £5000 was made for the purpose, but only the nominal sum of £o was spent. Apparently as an earnest intention, to make improvements to the Parliament Buildings, the Government has placed £500 on the Public Buildings list for "new buildings" in the Legislative block. Last year's' vote of £1000 for the purpose was utilised to the extent of only £50. A new wharf is to be constructed at Taupo, £2620 being allocated .for the purpose. The Wellington Magistrate's Court figures in the list of courthouses for improvement; a vote of £314 is made for additional accommodation. Another local item for. tho same purpose is £125 to be spent at the Upper Hutt courthouse. The sum of £5270 set aside last year towards the construction of the additions to the Wellington Supreme Court to provide accommodation for the Arbitration Court was over-expended by £912, and a further sum of £930 is now required to meet liabilities.

POLICE STATIONS AND POST OFFICES.

A large number of unexpended votes from last year for police stations are not renewed. The x vote of £1400 for the Eastbourne station is, however, increased to £1700. Wellington unexpended items not renewed are £1500 for a site and . building in Tinakori road, £600 for a site at Kelburn, £350 for a site at Wadestown, and & 1500 for a site and building at Paekakariki. For the purpose of a Post and Telegraph Store at Melling (Lower Hutt) £2850 is required.' As against the unexpended vote made last year of £2500 for a building and site for an automatic telephone exchange at Lower Hutt, this year the sum is increased to £4150. Wellington city renewed items are £1000 for alterations at the G.P.O. (on account of £2500), £515 for heating of the same building, and £15,000 for the new post office building at Courtenay place. The- partly expended vote last year of £2000 for a store, workshops, garage, buildings, and yards is increased to £5350. Unexpended votes from last year which are not renewed are £250 each for expenditure at Hataitai, Island Bay, Karori,- Kelburn, aud Khandallah, and £850 for additions at Te Aro; £5000 is voted for residences for postmasters. Additions to the veterinary laboratory at Wallaceville are estimated to cost £4500. In addition £650 is renewed for a poultry experimental station at the same place.

FOB HOSPITALS.

Giaiits are made to the Buller Hospital Board (£3000) and the Grey Hospital Board (£350) for restoration of earthquake damage, and £3650 is set aside for other works at health and bpspital institutions in the. affected area. The Wellington St. Helens Hospital is to x-eceivo £1600. Under harbour works, the £1500 allocated last year for the landing place, shed, and slipway for fishermen at Island Bay (£1 for £3 subsidy) .is renewed. For the deTelopment of tourist resorts it is proposed to expend' £300 for a hut at Copland Pass; £400. for the Chancellor Hut, £300 on the road to Lake Matheson, and £1350 on a, track and suspension bridge at Fox Glacier; £230 on the Aimer Hut, £1000 on tourist tracks, and, £300 on the Tutare Eiver suspension bridge .at Franz Josef Glacier; £3500 on additions to the Glade House hostel, and £200 for the installation of a wireless telephone; and £1750 on the erectioa of Malto Bran hut and £2500 (recoverable) .in the provision of Diesel plant at Mount Cook Hermitage. An important Eotorua item is £10,000 for the reconstruction of the Blue and Pavilion bath-houses (on account of £55,000). There is also £150 (£ for £) for the Tauherenikau Hut, and £230 (£ ■ for £) for a hut near Field's Peak. Detailed road votes in "Wellington, district are as follows:—Hutt County: Hay wards to Pahautanui, £3000; Moonshine road (£ for £), £200; Plimmerton to Pukerua, £628 (£3427 expended last year); Katanui road (Ngarara Settlement) (£ for £), £100. Featherston County: Awhea road bridges (Tnturuinuri' settlement) (£ for £2), £1350; Pahao-Glendha mail track, £2250; Stoney Creek-Whita Boad road (on account), £1800; Wairarapa Lake Domain road, £100; Whatarangi road (on account), £10,----500. Horowhenua County: Mark's road, £200; Ohau East road extension, £200; Paiaka road extension, £100; Taungata bridge, £250; Waikawa beach road extension, £200; Waiterere road extension (on account), £500.
