CHESS

THE WELLINGTON LEAGUE

This season's inter-club matches under the auspices of the Wellington Chess League, were concluded at Ngaio on Saturday evening, when the local club won its senior contest against the Wellington South C.C., and also defeated the Wadestown Club's representatives in the junior teams' tourney. A very cordial welcome was extended *.o both visiting sides by Mr. F. J. Brooker (president), who voiced the general regret that the Wellington South Club would not have the valued services of Mr. G. P. Anderson. Mr. Anderson, who was formerly a prominent player in Bristol, was a member of the Ngaio Club while residing in that area. Since then he has won. the championship of the Wellington and Wellington South Clubs, besides proving himself a formidable opponent at more than one tourney for the New Zealand championship. His absence on Saturday evening was, therefore, a great handicap to the Ivewtownites. During the refreshment interval Messrs. W. Berry (president of the Wellington South C.C.) and E. Benjamin (WadestOwn) returned thanks for the kind hospitality extended to the visitors. A very hearty vote of thanks to Mesdames E. and \V. Hicks, Miss Mays, and the Misses K. and G. Brooker for the excellent supper provided was carried with fervour. The play in the senior contest resulted as follows:— ; Ngaio. Wellington South. - Paulknor, 5....... * Gyles, A. W * Jones, G. Theclub well deserves the-congratulations that are being tendered on the high standard of. play that its members have attained. The runners-up, were the Wellington C.C.* in the senior tourney, and the Working Men's Club m the junior contest. The latter team was also undefeated, but its tally of one match won and two drawn left it half a point behind the Ngaio juniors, who won two matches and drew one. WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON TOURISTS. This two-round fixture, which was instituted over 20 years ago, is scheduled -to commence in Mastorton on Saturday next. The organising of the city team is in the hands of Mr. F. K. Kelling, who is hopetul of getting a fairly good side together, especially as the formidable Wairarapa team will, it is understood, include^ Messrs. Paul and Walter Kummer, in addition to five players from Grey town and J'eatherston. An exceedingly enjoyable reunion is looked for by all interested.

SOUTHLAND CLyB. The beautiful trophy donated by Sir Joseph Ward for the chess championship ot Southland is at present on exhibition in a shop window in Tay street, Invercargill. This trophy, which is attracting considerable attention and interest, is in the form of a chess cabinet, with a disappearing inlaid board, and set of chessmeu. As the Otago Witness" truly remarks, the winner ot such- a valuable piece of chess furniture should consider himself fortunate indeed. An earlier report stated that 20 members were competing for this handsome trophy.
