ELLERSLIE GALLOPS

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. Weather and track conditions were excellent for the final gallops at Ellerslie yesterday, and some smart gallops were registered on the outside of the course proper. The horses galloped outside the flags, 35£t out.

The best gallop over a distance was registered by Historic and Star Stranger, who covered a round in 2min Ssec—a good gallop. They were carrying light-weights. and Historic, on the outside, always appeared to be going easier than his companion, although there was little between them at the finish, where Star Stranger was hanging on well. These horses are goin<* to have numerous supporters in the Miteneison Cup, and they may finally dispute favouritism.

Another good gallop was that of Prodice, wno defeated Desert Glow over a mile in Imm 45 l-ssec. Prodiee was carrying a decent weight, and she pleased by the ease with which she accomplished her task. ilowever, unless rain falls to soften the track she will probably be withdrawn i!°S the Mltc«elson Cup in favour of her stablemate, Desert Glow, who will be ridden by L. Manson.

One of the best sprinting efforts was recorded by Silvermine, who was going stronger thanJPink Coat at the conclusion of six furlongs in Imin 18see—a good gallop. Silvermine is coming on quickly and will soon be at his best. Pink Coat was staying on at the finish, and this was pleasing' because he was working with a particularly good track horse. Eager Rose, King Emerald, Gold Money, and Respirator were associated in a gallop over nve furlongs, and King Emerald went very well in catching Eager Rose and registering lmm 3 l-ssee. Eager Rose took Imin 4 l-ssee. Gold Money and Respira- • tor were some lengths away. Alloy and Bombarder went four furlongs in 51 1-osee, and they cab both.be mentioned as improvers. Alloy was unlucky to lose at his last start, and might win at any tune, although he comes into sliohtlv ,™er com Panv at this meeting. * J.he Lover defeated Palmares over five w"w m nffilin 4 3~ssee> and Brampton beat War Officer over the same distance in lmm 5 2-ssee. Brampton is a fit horse and has good prospects of winning a hack race soon.

.Cylinder and Chief Link pleased hy run"'s"" 1' furlongs iv 50 3-ssec. There was little between them at the end. Cylinder's disadvantage in being on the outside was counterbalanced by Chief Link's extra weight. Cylinder failed to make a showing m the Avondale Stakes, but his work in the meantime has been very impressive Taneriri was better than Red Lion and Hannibal over five furlongs in lmin Ssec, and Keremoana went pleasingly over the same distance with Te Atiawa and Benzora m lmin 5 4-ssec. Eeremoana covered a good deal of ground and finished full of running. Benzora is. very bright and might race in improved fashion at ' any time now.

Oil King pleased better than Trickle over four furlongs in 50 4-ssec. ' Another two-year-old in Chrysology also pleased in recording the same time. Chrysology benefited by. his race last week, and may be very troublesome in the Welcome Stakes.

Golden Wedding went attractively in running six furlongs in Imiu IS 4-asec. It was a nice gallop for a hurdler, and her immediate prospects appear very bright, as she has been galloping and schooling consistently well. The Great Northern Guineas candidates, Hunting Cry and False Scent, wore associated in a nice gallop over a mile, -running the first hai'f in 53 2-osec, arid the full distance in lmin 46 3-ssec. They both worked well, although Hunting Cry on the outside was always going the easier. Hunting Cry is an improved three-year-old, and is likely ' to make a bold showing in the classic.

Amor and Leader also went a mile, but were not bustled, Amor leading throughout. The time was lmin 4Ssee. Amor is bright and might go -well in the Mitchelson Cup. Leader does not appeal as a Guineas winner. He possesses iine speed, but the last furlong may find him wanting, as he does not seem to stay well. Many other horses' were worked, but there was nothing of particular interest among the other gallops. Some who moved nicely included Roman Pearl, Spring Song, Lady's Boy, Value, and 'Merry Mint. Great Charter was allowed to stride along over four furlongs without being extended and again displayed soreness after pulling up, although it was not pronounced.

Tho riders for the Milchclson Cup will bo as follows: U. S. Bagby, Star Stranger; B. 11. Morris,- Historic: 11. Goldfinch, Prince Humphrey; W. 11. Jones, Barometer; X: Voitro, NPiuthair; 11. Wiggins. Transformer; E. Ludlow, Higl^Pitch; \i. Keesing, Singleton; L. Manson, Deswt Glow; N. Voitre* Talisker; and T. Metcalfe, Amor. Prodice is unlikely to run, but if started she will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Locally, Historic, Star Stranger, Piuthair, and Prince Humphrey are the favourites for the Mitchelson Cup.

Popular fancies for the Shorts Handicap include Lady Quex, Havering, Awavcvc, and Polyxena. Havering worked steadily on tho tan this morning, and looked very bright.

The latest; arrivals include Elysiiinor, Askuri, and Otairi.
