AFTERNOON RECEPTION

There was a great gathering of Wellington people and visitors yesterday afternoon at tlio Adelpbi Cabaret, when Mrs. J.. G. Coates. and Miss Downic Stowart gave a very pleasant entertainment in the form of an afternoon tea. The large ballroom at the cabaret was charmingly arranged with palms and flowers, the long tables down. the room being set with bowls of beautiful daffodils and jonquils from Lady Rhodes's garden in Christchureh, and thero were also artistic arrangements of branches of prunis, flowering currant, and crab-applo blossom from Lady Eoborts's garden at Lower Hutt. In all the decorations were very charming. Mrs. Coates, wearing bright red marietta .ploated frock, a hat of the samo tone, and a fox fur, and Miss Downie Stewart, in a black satin ensemble, with gold embroidery on tho coat, and a black, hat with coloured motifs across the front, received the guests. A charming surprise to Mrs. Coates was the presentation from the Women's Auxiliary of the Reform Leaguo of a dainty basket of pansies and fern, as a memento of tho anniversary of her birthday, which was yesterday.
