ARBITRATION COURT

METHOD OF CHPIWG RAWPIES

(By Telegraph.— Preit Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day. An objection to tho present method of citing parties to the Harvest Hands and Chaff-cutters' Award was taken by Mr. Herbert, the union representative, during tho hearing at the Arbitration Court.

Mr. Herbert said that the citation of 10,000 employers individually was an enormous cost to the union and also to the Government.

i When approached, the Prime Ministor reforred them to the Secretary of tho Labour Department, who suggested that tho Court might recommend a new method. Tho union thought lists might be printed with citations and deposited in tho Post Offices and also advertised in tho respective districts. Tho present postage and registration of citations cost £500, and the cost of the envelopes and labour was £1500. Mr. Justice Frazer said that it was a question of law, which directed that everyone was to get a personal citation. He did not think that tho Court could do anything. i Mr. Cookson, for the employers, stated that the new method would be opposed by every employers' organisation in the Dominion. _ The Judge thought that such a drastic amendment must be discussed by tho parties. Its result would be that each employer would not have a copy of the claims. Mr. Cookson said that there was a suggestion that the threshing mill owners be cited instead of the farmers, which would limit the numbers. He undertook to obtain the views of the Farmers' Union.
