NOW SHAPING WELL

A few weeks ago the pilot of a ligfc* aeroplane which visited Wellington expressed some doubt whether the Bongo- * tai Airport would be in a fit. condition for the holding of the Wellington Aero Club's pageant on 16th and 18th November, basing these- doubts, apparently, upon the rather soft state of a portion of the ground which had been, given a dressing of pulverised refnss from the rubbish masticator, the, ia|terruption of the landing length by a couple of pairs of football goalposts, and the incomplete eonsolida* tion of the new clay surface on other i parts of the ground. The complaints came as rather a surprise to the City Council, which ha« several times made it quite clear that it is not encouraging flying until the landing field is a finished job, or .so nearly finished that it compares well with well-established aerodromes as to surface. Tho football posts will, ot course, be removed. '

-On -Tuesday afternoon Wing' Commander Grant-Dalton, the Acting Direo tor of Air Services, accompanied by; Major L. Isitt and.Mr. J. N. Thompson, the Assistant City Engineer; inspected tho ground and expressed th» opinion that it should be ra quite fit order for the pageant. ; ;

Later in the day Captain BurreU, of the Spckburn Aero3rome, arrived at Bongotai with Dr. T. H. A. Valintine; Director-General of Health, who had been recalled from the South Island oa short notice. Captain Burrell experienced no difficulty in landing q* in taking off, which he did after aboot a ten minutes' stay.
