A SERIOUS CHARGE
A carrier, Clarence Moore, aged .29, was charged in the Magistrate's Court yesterday with having assaulted a married woman with intent to commit rape. Detective W. R. Murray, who with Detective N. W. Baylis, arrested Moore at Otaki early' on Sunday morning, stated that when first seen the accused in reply to the allegation said, "That is a whole lot of rot." Later, however, the accused sent for him and volunteered a statement, in which he admitted the charge. Moore said he hid been drinking heavily. In answer to a question by Moore's counsel (Mr. D. Perry), Detective : Murray said there whs nothing unusual about the accused being found at Otaki. He went there practically every week-end. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was refused.
