VITAMIN D.
PATENTING OF DISCOVERIES
Tho annual report of the Scientific and Industrial Eosearch Department states that the patenting by a United States research organisation of the production of vitamin D by irradiation of certain compounds with ultra-violet light has raised tho question of policy in regard to patenting of discoveries or suggestions of research officers. Hithorto, the policy of full publication of results has been followed, with little or no thought of patenting. "It appears desirable, however, that, in tho public interest, in many cases patents should be taken out in ordor to prevent fraud by those who exploit these results without giving the necessary scientific service," says the report. "It is not suggested that profits from patents should be mado in New Zoaland, but that reputable companies bo frooly liconsed to use patents, provided a genuine service is safeguarded. This principle was followed in Canada in connection with the discovery of insulin in a laboratory supported by public funds." . . •-.
