PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Tie Petone Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie) presiding. There were also present Councillors C. P. Brockelbank, J. C. Burns, R. W. Toomath, E. T. Hogg, H. O. Orsborn, J. W. Longman, V. E. Jacobsen, and V. A. Noble.

The Minister of Railways thanked the council for its interest in the bus service, and assured the council that tho new buses wero to be retained in the Hutt-Welling-ton service. The Railway Department could not accede to the request to make return tickets available for use for journeys in either direction by bus or railway.

The Free Ambulance thanked the council Ifcs- ,subsid y- T'»e Mayor (Mr. D. MKenzie) said tho Free Ambulance rendered a most excellent and humanitarian service, and he had much pleasure in moving a motion of appreciation of the service and praise for the efficient service of the brigade. Councillor Hogg seconded the motion,. and it was carried. The proposed Free Ambulance Enablin"- Bill was approved.

The Mayor stated that from the Petone and Korokoro district, since the Free Ambulance service had been instituted, 002 patients had been carried, and this meant a saving of 25s a'patient compared with the old service. The Mayor eomniented on the smallness of the Petone Borough Council's contributions, but stated that the industries of Petone contributed £332 per annum to the service. Application from the Hutt.Valley Cricket Association and the Petone Cricket Uub for the use of the recreation ground tor the. ensuing year were referred to the Reserves Committee, with power to act. The question of dealing' with a builder who had erected a garage without a permit was reterred to the engineer. A draft o£ tlie proposed building bylaws amendment was referred to the Bylaws Committee.

A ratepayer drew the attention of the council to a decayed timber drain which carried the diverted water of a creek through his property. It was decided to replace the timber drain with permanent pipes at an estimated cost of £80. The request of a builder to be allowed to erect residential flats in Bouverie street was reterreS to the Works Committee. The engineer (Mr. C. L. Jackson) reported that the City Engineer had stated that he could not recommend the construction of a footpath over a pipe bridge as suggested by the council, the bridge at the present time being fully loaded. He was prepared to repair the present footpath^ and more clearly define it.1 The question of lighting was not, he considered, a matter for the City Council. . Councillors expressed their dissent from theview taken by the City Engineer, and decided to approach the City Council again on the ground that the bridge is at present dangerous. The engineer reported that the recent rams had caused several slips on the Jxorokoro- road, two having been more serious than usual. In one place temporary repairs had been effected, but a bridco would ultimately be needed. As the result oi an interview with the Lower Hutt Borough Engineer, he had been informed that the. Lower Hutt Council did not at present require the use of the Petoue rubbish tip.
