UPPER HUTT LOANS
SANCTIONED WITH CONDITIONS
Letters from the Local Government Loans Board in connection with loans for which sanction had been sought by the Upper Hutt Borough Counc.il were considered at the meeting of the council last night.
The board wrote, concerning the Municipal Offices, Shops, and Workshops Site Loan of £2000, stating that it had referred the matter back for further information to be supplied as to tho use to which the building at present ou the, site would be put if the municipal offices were erected thereon. If the building was then to be demolished the term of the loan should be reduced accordingly.
It was decided to reply to the Loans Board that the building was to be kept as. a workshop.
The other matter was in connection with the "Waterworks Loan of £20,300. The board declined to sanction £1000 in respect of the item "head works," as it was of the opinion that the dam 30 feet above water level only should be erected, as referred to in the report of the consulting engineer, Mr. Toogood. The board was of the opinion that the plans and specifications submitted in connection with the new fire station building were not suitable for thb" purpose of calling for tenders, and hail inserted a proviso in tlie sanction that the final plans and, specifications must be approved by the Public Works Department. The proposal was, however, sufficiently in- order to enable a poll to be' taken, the final approval of the plans being left in abeyance until alter the poll is carried. The board declined to sanction the expenditure of loan money on the various items of equipment specified in connection with the Fire Brigade Loan, as it was of the opinion that such items should be charged to revenue. The only items which were sanctioned in the Fire Brigade Loan were the new fire station, the fire engine, and the installation of a fire alarm system-. The amount of the loan was-not reduced, as the board considered that the estimates supplied in connection with the erection of the building were on the low side, and that *o-J? m 0£ nt re1««-ea for it would be pOO. Regarding the1 reticulation loan of £10,000, the board's technical advisers were of the opinion that the proposed new 6-inch main in Richmond street should, be continued for the full length of Ca&pbell and Murray streets. Tho council decided to inform the Local Government Loans Board that it was gratified with the permission given and that the conditions as outlined would be complied with. •4/be taken? latepayerS ** aCCOra-
