ASSAULT AND THEFT
END OF A ROMANCE
Setween 10 and 10.30 yesterday morning a labourer, William Logan, visited a boarding-house in Boulcott street and assaulted a cook with whom he had Been keeping company. ■ He'then- went away, ■ but returned, to the house in the" evening, when he destroyed some of her property and broke a window before finally being ;handed over to the police. Logan came before the I Court this morning and pleaded guilty to two charges of mischief, but denied charges of haying assaulted tho cook and of stealing &7 10s of her money. ..
The-police evidence was that Logan went to the house in the morning and, catching hold' of the throat of the copk^: struck her on the face. \ It was alleged that • Logan. got into the house, ,in the evening by climbing through, a window.. He. was found: hiding behind a: curtain in the cook's•- room by the boarding-house keeper and was put off the premises, but when he got outside ie threw stones at the house, breaking a window. It was found that ILogan had destroyed some of the { cook's "clothing and had stolen money. "When arrested by the p6liee a razor was found in his possession, and. with this, it was alleged, he had: damaged the clothing. ■
After- the complainant, ancb-a. constable had given evidence, i LiSgaiL; was put in the box. He "saM;S^" "had known- the.- complainant, fofefour years and they had bee,ji friendly 'until) Saturday evening. He;had given her £9 10s to keep for- him," and he' went ■':.to the house to get the money. She admitted him into the house ii the evening aiid gave him his money. '
Recalled, the complainant said it ■was untrue that she let the accused into the house or gave him money. ', -■ The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) said he proposed to convict the accused on all four charges. Logan w. as fined & 5 on the charges of mischief' and was ordered to make good the damage, £7 12s 6d; on the charge/ of assault he wa3 convicted and discharged, and on the charge of theft he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon, a condition being _ made that he reimburses the complainant from money-found in his possession.
On the application of Mr. W. B. Rainey, counsel for the accused, Logan was allowed a month to pay the money. Default was fixed at two months' imprisonment. , "You must tell the accused to refrain from molesting the complainant." said Mr. Page to counsel. Mr. Rainey: "He says he won't have anything further to do with her "
