SOCKETS AT SEA?

MESSAGE MOM AWANUI

The following message was received by the Acting-Secretary of tho G.P.O. at 7.30 p.m., yesterday, from the officer in chargo of the Awanui radio station: "The postmaster at Awanui reported at 6.35 ip.m. that two rockets with rod lights had been seen in a direction east-south-east at approximately 6 p.m. - "I have communicated with Cape Maria van Diemen, who statec that his vision does not extend-east of North Cape; and with Cape Brett, who reports that tug Lyttelton passed south at 5.30 p.m. (therefore not in question), and a vessel resembling Maui , Pomare passed north about 11 a.m., these being the only vessels noticed."

From inquiries made at tho Marino Department to-day it was learned that no further information regarding tho message has been received. The opinion is expressed that tho lights are more likely to bo due to natural phenomenon than to ships' rockets, as the rockets 'used by ships give a white flame. '■ ■ ■ .
