NOT ALLOWED TO LAND
FAMILY TO TRY AUSTRALIA
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. Although they arrived at Auckland from Honolulu by the Niagara on Monday full of hopes of settling in New Zealand for a period, a family named Xury was not allowed to land by the Immigration Department, and the entire party, with the exception of one lady, were passengers on the Niagara ■when she resumed her trip to Sydney last night.
The Customs officials at Auckland referred their case to Wellington on Monday, and a reply was received yesterday afternoon to the effect that temporary ]>ennits to reside in New Zealand would not be issued to the party. One lady, however, a daughter-in-law of Peter Xury, who appears to be the head of the family, is suffering from gastritis, and the Collector of Customs decided to allow her to remain in Auckland for medical attention.
The position now is that the Xury family, comprising husband and'wife, their five sons (two of whom are married and accompanied by their wives and four young children), three daughters, and a son-in-law, will travel to Sydney and apply for permits to land there. It is quite possible that they will meet with considerable difficulty *nd will have to return to Honolulu.
Peter Xury emphatically denies a statement that he and his family are gipsies, and claims they are American citizens. Three of his sons were qualified motor mechanics, he said, and all the adult members of the family were capable of supporting themselves in New Zealand. Tho family wished to work its way to England. It is thought that the family has been refused a permit owing to the trouble experienced with a large family of gipsies some time ago. This family eventually had to be deported, and the immigration authorities were caused nraeh trouble.
