TOO MANY TEACHERS
AUCKLAND BOARD'S MOVE
'(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") • AUCKLAND, This Day. With over "100 of its certificated teachers out of permanent positions, the' Auckland Education Board is considering the advisability of displacing uncertificated teachers in order to open further positions for competition. At the last meeting of the board the senior inspector (Mr. C. W. Garrard) furnished' a report showing that over 50 uncertifieated teachers held posts in the service, and he recommended that the positions of all those except licensed teachers and returned 6oldiers should be advertised. In ordinary circumstances the board would probably find no occasion to displace these uncertiflcated teachers, but it is considered such steps should be taken owing to the large number of unemployed teachers. Under the regulations a certificated teacher may challenge a post held by'an uncertifieated teacher and the board would be required to throw open the position for competition, This practice is not ' usually adopted by teachers, and so far has never occurred in the board's service.
The board has appointed a committee to consider fully the ease of the uncertificated teachers and the inspector's recommendation. The committee wilj report to a meeting of the board.
