RELIEF FROM HUNTLY FUND
In the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. H. Holland (Christchurch North gave notice to move for a return showing: (1) How much of the money raised by public subscription for the relief'of the sufferers by the Huntly mining disaster about 1916 or 1917 remains unspent; (2) if it should be seen that a considerable sum still remains in hand, will the Government introduce legislation so that any balance not required for the purpose for "which it was raised should be used for the relief of sufferers by the recent earthquake on the West Coast.
On this subject the Christehurch "Press" states that during the Mayoralty of Mr. H. Holland, now M.P. for Christchurch North,-on 12th September, 1914, a disaster occurred at the Huntly mine, and forty-three lives were lost. To assist the families of the dead miners a fund was raised in Christehureh and reached a total of £1100. The money was not needed for the purpose for which it was raised, and passed into the control of the Public Trustee. Mr. Holland told a reporter that he had mentioned the existence of this fund to the Mayor (Mr. J. K. Archer), and had suggested that possibly it might be found that it could be used for the relief of the sufferers by the West Coast earthquake. Mr. Archer intends to have the matter inquired into in the hope that the money will be available. , -
