CYCLING

RIDING AGAINST TIME

NEWS/AND NOTES

(By "Penny-Parthing.")

Fox the time trial held by tUo'Poi-t Nicholson Amateur Boad Cycling: Club on Saturday, it was unfortunate that the steward usually at the tnrnLng point was unable to be present, with the reBult that the ridors turned at the wrong point, making the "distance 23J miles instead of 25 miles. The winner of time honours received a handsome sash, donated by Mr. S. Vondersloot. Trophies for other plaeings were given by Messrs. E. Jago, A." Couehman, and Bennett's, Ltd., Wanganui. • While the evenf was in every way a success, it was very: disappointing to the club's officials that only 24 competitors entered for the race. The trophies on Saturday were by far the best offered this, season, and if the entries for that day can be taken W a guide for future races, the Port Nicholson Club will be justified in considering a reversion to.fortnightly: races. Two of the "best competitors^ Stan Wright and Les" Pearce, 'had their chances settled through receiving punctures on the Hutt .road^ cycle track before reaching Kahvarra. •."'-'■ The following is a list of the individual times for- the distance: 1, W. T. Bray, 59min 54 3-ssee; 2, E. F. Bellnian, 62rnin 26 2-ssec; 3, F. Hoare 65 mm sseej 4, P. Sutherland, 65min 5 4-ssee; 5, J. A. Campbell, 65min 25 4-ssec; 6, C. Ericsson, 65min 31 l-ssec: 7, D. Evans, 65min 34 3-ssec; 8, A. White, 66min 56 l-ssec; 9, P. Christensen, 66min 58 3-ssec; 10, C. Tasker 67min 44 4-ssec; 11, E. Fawcett, GB,inin 12 3-ssec; 12, C. Johnston, 68miu 18 l-ssee; 13, G. Bray, who secured fastest time, was the seventeenth rider to leave the mark, and was the second home, J. Campbell, who was fifth away, being the first to arrive. The unlucky competitor was undoubtedly Jack Foote who was going great guns when he punctured shortly after leaving Petone on the run home. He mended his puncture and even then was seventh man Nome, after being sixth away. It cannot be said that all the competitors rode unpaced the whole way for it was seen that'some riders were in bunches; and, it was from one bunch that one of the.placed men came. No doubt there was a shortage of officials on the day, but surely competitors do not have to be reminded that they are not to ride in bunches when competing an a time trial, and they must not ride on the" Hutt load. The plaeings in the sealed handicap, held in conjunction with the time trial, were.—l, F. Hoare (sfmin), 59mm 35sec; 2, W. T. Bray (scr), 59 mm 54 3-ssec; 3, J. A. Franklyn (7*min), 62min 0.2 l-ssecj 11, L. Everitt (7min),:62min 06 l-ssec; 12, C. Johnston (6min), 62 mm 18 l-ssee; 13, G. Puinti (6min), 62 mm 28 l-ssec; 14, F. Christensen (4* mm), 62min 28 3-ssec; 15, D. Evans (3min), 62min 3i 3-ssec; 16, A. Tpomer (6min), 63min 19 l-ssec; 17, J. Leonard (6Jmin), 63min.21 3-ssec4 18, B. There were a dozen starters in ihe boys' race, which was over the same eourso as usual—to STgahauranga and return. The result was a win for L. .Lebone (2Jmin), with T. Pettitt (2^ mm), second, and' E:M'Keown (3min), third.- Fastest time was secured by B. Williams (scr), 22min ?6 4-ssec, withsecond honours going to A. ;Blackett (finin), 22min 38 l-ssec, and third to L. Lebone (2*min), 22min 42sec. T. Pettit's time was fourth fastest, being l-ssec behind that of Lebone. The race was closely contested and there is no doubt that the- staging of these events will go a long way towards bringing on our future riders, and also towards increasing the popularity of the sport. The- distance of the races is gradually increasing, and to-morrow the course will cover 30 miles. This distance will test the staying powers of riders, especially as there is about half a mile of loose metal to be co-vefed near the turning point, in the vicinity of the Toll Bridge. The course does not extend quite as far as the slip which came down last week. Eiders are advised to see that there are no weak spots in their tires, for the metal is sure to find them out.
