MEETING OF COUNCIL

The Victoria University College Council rriet last evening, Mr. C. Watson presiding. 'The council agreed to the Auckland Council's suggestion that the conference of the four university authorities should be lield on Ist-August. , The opinion of the Victoria Council was that the colleges should each have three representatives. The recommendation that the Sir Robert Stout Scholarship for this year be awarded to Miss Moira Dennehy, B.Sc, was approved. The report of the Professorial Board for 1928 stated that the number of students attending classes was 816, an increase of 7 on'the number for 1927. The number of books entered as accessions to the library was on 31st December, 1928, 22.Q98. During the year ending 31st December, 1928, 1310 books Had been added to the library at a cost of £060. Of that sum £242 was spent on periodicals, and approximately £20 on year books, annual reports, digests, etc. This year volumes were received from the Carnegie Trust, from the New Zealand and other Governments, from learned societies, from the Wellington branch of the League of Nations Union, and from the/following private donors :-rFrom Sir Frederick Chapman (23), from Professor Boyd-Wilson (13), from Mr. W. D. Hunt (40). A gift of 496 volumes, chiefly source books of British colonial history, many of them handsomely bound, '•was made by Mr. W. J. M'Eldowney. A large collection of pamphlets, including 1066 relating to New Zealand (352 of them iound)y were given by Sir Robert Stout. In relation to the William Weir bequest, the council had now approved of the plans ' for the first portion of the main hostel building. This would comprise the eastern and southern wings and would provide accommodation for about 90 students. It •was intended also- to proceed with the building of the block containing the dining ' hall and kitchen, quarters. It was hoped to'call for tenders for these two blocks in ; -:'a few weeks' time. All the minor be"quests had now been paid out of the in- ,. come of the estate, and the Public Trustee ' 'was ready to hand over to the college the money for building purposes (representing 'half the value of the estate).
