SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.
Barometers have risen somewhat with the gradual eastward movement of an intense depression. Winds between west and southwest have prevailed, reaching gale strength at many places. In most districts very unsettled and squally weather has prevailed with intermittent rain. Thunderstorms have been reported in parts and snow in some districts of the South Island. At Wellington, although threatening at times, there has been no rain and this morning it was fine. Conditions were also fair on the east coast between East Cape and Oamaru. Temperatures have become very cold in the southern half of the South Island. '
