A FINE INFLICTED

C\t™ *eSS I* °f a visit PaM-by Sergeant Cleary and a constable to the Imperial Hotel on Anzac: Day, the licensee, Mary Kyan, and the .barman, James Ryan appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M.f to' the Magistrate's Court to-day charged with aiding and abetting four men in'being on the premises after hours. ' Mr. C. B. O'Donnell appeared for the defendants^ Jameji Ryan pleaded- guilty, but Mrs. Ryan not guilty.. . -. - .' ■- In: evidence, Sergeant Cleary said that acting on information received, he .visited the hotel at about 5.25 pjn. on the day in question. There was some delay in adknitting him. He met Mrs. Ryan in the kitchen, and asked her if there was anyone on the premises. She said there was no one there, to which he replied that according to his information there'was; and he would have to search the premises. He went'upstairs and found the door of one! room locked. ■ Sirs. Ryan refused to unlock the door. She'said it: was .her- own room. Witness obtained, a chair JltlA looked over, the door,, and saw a. man sitting in the room. The licensee then' opened the door, and there were four, men, in the room, three oi whom had since been convicted of being illegally on the premises. After hearing Mrs. Ryan's evidence, the Magistrate said that Mr. O'Donnell need not carry the case any further.,"! find it a little difficult," he said, "to believe that in a small house like this four-men. could have been admitted and ..the commotion incidental to .hiding.;them could' have occurred,without Mrs. Ryan*having some [knowledge; of-j '*..!.The." evidenced just falls short of ..establishing- the., charge against Mrs; -Ryan." -..
