WESTPORT COAL

THE COMPANY'S MINES

PERIOD OF IDLENESS

(By Telegraph.)

r (Special to "The Evening Post.") KUNEDIN, This Day. Upon the authority of the general manager, of the Westport Coal Company, the mine at Granity did not suffer to any extent by the earthquake. The directors had been advised that there would be no difficulty in. restarting work last Monday, probably with a reduced output, but there have been continued tremors, and it had been deemed wise to wait until they cease. As to the company's other mine at Denniston >the information is that work will be resumed, provided the weather conditions are satisfactory, in the course of eight or ten days. The mine itself is not damaged, but some of the outside roads leading to it are covered with debris from the adjacent cliffs and require clearing. ■' . The Kaitangata Coal Company has had to put on a number of extra miners to augment the ouput aad meet the demands from Canterbury and other districts suffering from the coal.shortage.
