SUBURBAN BOROUGHS
PETONE
A NEW COUNCIL
The election results at Pelonc showed a surprising reversal of public opinion in favour of the Citizens'Associa-
tion's "ticket" as against the Labour Party's "ticket"—a change all the more remarkable in view oftho success achieved by Labour at the last municipal elections. Not one Labour candidate was elected on any issue, all the vacant seats on the Council, the Power Board, and the Gas Board going to the Citizens' Association's nominees. Mr. David M'Kenzie was re-elected unopposed for the Mayoralty, the fact that there was no contest robbing the election of much of its interest. The proposal to raise the sum of £01,000 for a water supply improvement scheme for the borough was endorsed by an overwhelming majority of electors, this being due, 110 doubt, to the fact that tlio scheme was advocated by both parties. When the results became known, the successful candidates addressed the crowd from the balcony 'of the Municipal Buildings, thanking them, and assuring them of their best services during the next two years. The Mayor was unable to be present, as he was confined to his home by illness.
The 'following are the detailed results as disclosed by the lir.st count.
