TRAIN PULLED UP
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
An attempt was made last night to derail tho train from Wellington known as Isold's Express, by placing.fishplates and a sleeper across the rails near Longburn. Tho sleeper was placed slantwise between tho rails,- with fishplates at either end to ride the wheels off. Ilowovor, tho traffic inspector, after visiting tho scone, considered tho obstruction could not possibly havo caused derailment.
Prior to the time the train was duo at Longburh a porter obsorveil two men on the permanent way. As he considered that they wore in danger, ho went to warn them. He found that the men had left, but discovered the sleeper and the fishplates on tho line. The train was then only a short distance away. He signalled to tho driver, and tho train was stopped after a slight impact, with the obstruction.
