CITY'S FINANCES

ELECTRIC LIGHT PLANT

NELSON, 12th Apvil.

. A credit balance of £180 3s lOd is shown in a statement of receipts and expenditure in the general account tabled at a special meeting of the City Council last night. In addition there is a store o£ metal at the quarry valued at £484. , .The municipal baths account is the only one at -present in debit. The credit in the electric light account is £3238 0s 6d. The. City Engineer said there wat £1500 worth of coal in stock in addition to the amount at this time last year. The Town Clerk . stated, in answer .to a question,' that when the present council came into office there was a credit balance of £250 in the general account, but over .£4OO had been transferred from the water "account to balance the' general account. The Mayor (Mr; W." J. Moffatt) stated that not a single transfer had to- be made this year. . '

Yesterday 13,000 cases of apples went to Wellington. . About 0500 cases jvere loaded by the Kaitoa at Mapua to-day, and the. Arahura will take about 2500 cases from Nelson to-night.

A grant of £250 to the Cawthron. Institute for research into the mineral content of pastures has been approved by the Minister in charge of the Department .of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Hon. H. Atmore. •■ ; ■

The new electric light plant—a steam turbo-alternator —recently installed at the power house, took over the load yesterday after successful trial runs. The newunit is expected to meet the city's needs for the next seven .years, after-.which it is probable that extra boilers will have to be installed. ; , '•
