NOT A MODERN STREET

(To the Editor.)

- Sir,—Despite the hustle .and "bustle of the past few years.to bitmhinise our highways and by-ways, it wil| be refreshing to those;who have a regard for relics of bygone days to find that the sacrilegious hand of the modern road-maker has been excluded from at least, one.of our suburban roads. That' old-established road along the crest of Rongotai • Hill, known, as Kongotai terrace, has, so far escaped the .attentions of the' "road-pecker." With wonderful foresight, Rongotai • terrace has been preserved ( '!) as a scenic wonder and," with the exception of ■'the . filling in of ruts caused by the heavy wheels of bullock wagons in the early 'nineties this sdmewhat exclusive residential road has not been disturbed by 'the modernist. When the gentle "southerly" blows and the moisture iii the. atmosphere seems more than, usually penetrating the natureloving resident may be seen • to stroll slowly (of necessity) along the'old familiar rocky track. Ho wends his way carefully round tho "Devil's Rongotai Elbow" past "Broken Slate Gully" and notes with pleasure that the rustic bridges .which at intervals span the ever-deepening road creek are still standing. .. He listens— with pride perhaps—to the roaring waterfalls in the aforesaid creek and, with the agility born of diligent, practice he springs from- bank to bank until with a final bound ho avoids "Sand Pit Gulch" and. enters into the civilisation, of Coutts street.—l am, etc., ■ . '. . PIONEER.
