SHOULD LISTS BE OPENED?

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"We have bled the public pretty thoroughly," said the MayOi (Mr. G. Baildou) last evening, when a suggestion that a fund might be established for the relief of distress in China came before the City Council. Ho read a telegram from the Mayor of Wellington, stating that sixteen million Chinese were facing starvation, and indicating the steps which had been taken towards the establishment of a fund in the capital city.

"My experience is that all the money raised here can bo .spent hero," Mr. Baildon said. "This is not a job I look forward to with any comfort, but I think wo should givo the public an opportunity to contribute by opening a list."

Mr. E. J. Plioliiu: "I think wo should wait for a lead from tho Government."

Mr. A. J. Entrican said that the council should set an example, and he suggested giving 100 guineas.

Miss. E. Melville: "While, we do not want to minimise the miser; in that unfortunate country, I think we should call a public meeting to get the view of the citizens."

Mr. M. J> Coyle remarked that the Government had refused to assist the British miners, and it would bo difficult to reconcile a donation to the Chinese appeal.

Tho question was deferred until a general meeting of • the council.
