DESIGNS FOR ART GALLERY

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l do hope the Museum and Art Gallery Committee will spread the compete tion for tho designs of the proposed Art Gallery ■to the architects of the British Empire, instead of confining it exclusively, to New Zealand architects. By doing thig 1 think it would be an advantage to this country, whereby the best talent ia the Empire would contribute its share to ita success. We should be more broadiminded and make our Art Gallery, by itt» viting the architects of our great Empire to contribute to the designs, a credit tai British art. —I am, etc., N.Z. SOLDIER. 33th March.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I read with much interest "E.C.'s" letter of the 12th inst. regarding the vots passed by the Museum and Art Gallery Committee to confine the competition to New Zealand architects. lam pleased to see that Sir Joseph Ward and the Government have awakened up to the 'fact that it is time New Zealanders had a show to bring their architectural knowledge to the front. In the past thera has been too much outside competition, | not only in this but "in other works of ! art, which to my mind casts a good deal of reflection upon our universities, etc. What do we educate our children for? Not to take their knowledge outside of I our land when we need it here for the betterment of New Zealand and New . Zealanders. I commend the members of the committee for the step they have I taken.—l am, etc., ■ • 1 A MAORILANDER. 15th March.
