THE "MISS ENGLAND"

The boat, "Miss 'England," was built by the British Power Boat Company, Ltd., of Hythe, Southampton. Sho.is 27ft 6in in length, 7ft 6in in breadth, and has a .total weight of 29 cwt. The power unit consists of a 12-cylinder Napier Lion engine, similar to that fitted in the car, and to the engines used by the British Schneider Cup seaplane team which was successful in winning that trophy last year. Although non-super-charged, these engines develop no less than 930 h.p. at full throttle, owing to their super-efficient design. A hydroplane, "Miss England" is an entirely new departure in boat construction, having a specially designed and strengthened hull of great lightness and breadth, to eliminate the risk of turning over, due to the excessive torque from the transmission of 900 h.p. from a single propeller. The propeller, itself will run at an underwater speed of 6550 r.p.m.—a speed hitherto believed impossible, and only realised as a result of experimental work carried out over a period of some months. The present world's record speed on water stands to the credit of America, at an average speed, taken from the mean of six runs over a measured mile, of 92.83 m.p.h.
