DUTIES TOO HIGH

ON WHEAT AND FLOUE

REDUCTION NEXT SEASON

The question of altering the present sliding scale of duties on flour and wheat was discussed by Cabinet yesterday afternoon.

It was decided not to alter the tariff for the present season, but to examine fully before next Beason's operations commence the advisability of reducing the duties and the guarantee of prices to the growers.

The Prime Minister (the Bight Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) stated at the close of the Cabinet meeting that the general opinion of the Government was that reasonable protection to tho wheat and flour interests in the country was most desirable, and that at present the duties upon both wheat and flour and the guarantee price were too high. The Government was anxious to ensure that in the arrangements made for the year following the present, season they did all in their, power to prevent the country having to rely upon external supplies of those important commodities.
