NEW-MASONIC TEMPLE

There was a large gathering of Freemasons for the official opening of the new* temple in Collingwood- street last night. B.W. Bro. Moyes, chair--, man' of trustees,'presided, and. speeches; were delivered by the P;G.M.,- NelsonMailborough (R.W. Bro'. Girling) and R.W. Bro. Jesse Steer (Nelson-West-land). The , new temple, -which .'-was designed by Messrs. Houlker and Duke, is in the. classic renaissance style, Corinthic order, and is a notable addition to Nelson's architecture.
' Big slips iat the foot of. the Hope Saddle on the Nelson side have considerably interfered with, traffic, on the main, West Coast road. ' The 'slips came down late yesterday afternoon, and a number of,,cars were held up.
A comprehensive tour of the. Nelson district is being made by officers of the Tourist Department. They are: Messrs. A. E. Wilson, of head office, Wellington; R. W. Coupland (Wanganui); J. A. Malcolm (Auckland); and O. R. Wilkins (Wellington).
Mr. Frank Milner, rector of Waitaki High School, passed through Nelson last night on his way, to the Empire Education Conference at Vancouver, for which'he has been selected by the Government as New Zealand's delegate. After a tour of inspection to the ,'chief cities and educational institutions in Canada, and the United States Mr. Milner will accompany the British delegation to England and will' later attend a world conference at Elsinore, Denmark, on the "new idealism in education."
The Minister of Mines (the Hon. W. A. Veitch) has advised Mr. G. C. Black, M.P., that the Takaka deputation's representations to ihe Minister on his recent visit concerning the use of Now Zealand marble in 'the proposed National War Memorial. will bo taken fully into consideration when tho matter comes up for final decision.
The Hon. W. A. Veitch will officially open the Murehison A. and P. Show on 16th March.
Regarding the position of soldier settlors' at Golden Downs, .the Hon. G. W. Forbes will visit the Nelson district before the opening of .Parliament.
Archbishop O'Shea, who' was in Nelson, yesterday, loft for the West Coast this morning. After a- tour, of that district ho will return-via Nelson.
The annual meoting of. the' Nclaon Rugby Union was hold last night. The union has shown a loss of £35 on the year's workings, chiefly accounted for by smaller attendances and heavy touring expenses. " The* following officers were elected: President, Mr. A. Max; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. V. Searlo and G-.' P. Eussell; secretary, Mr. F. Lock; treasurer, Mr. D. Morritt; town selectors, Messrs. H. Chapman and C. Kinzett; honorary surgeon, Mr. W. D. Stoney Johnston (re-elected); junior selectors, Messrs. J. Wallace-, A. Betts and J. Kos3.
At the annual meeting of the Nelson Poultry Association Mr. J. L. Liddle was elected president.
Nelson is to meet MarlboTough in a cricket match for the Newman Shield on 22nd and 23rd March.
