The historic vase of antique glass, known as tho Portland or Barberini vase, the property of the Duke of Portland, which for over. 100 years has been exhibited on loan Tn the British Museum, is to be offered for sale at Christie's auction room on 2ncf May. The vase was at one time in tho possession of the family of. the Pope Barberini, or Urban VIII., and remained in' the Barberini Palace until about 1766 whenit was sold, and four years later came into the possession of the DowagerDuchess of Portland.
Tho ivase, which is about ten inches high, aiid inado .of deep blue glass, with white Jopaque figures upon it of remarkable workmanship, was discovered near Biome in 1582. Its age is unknown), but some experts believe it to bo of j Greek origin, probably dating from (about 60 A.D. In 11845 a noted visitoA to the British Museum smash: ed the yase into a hundred pieces, but the scattered fragments iwero assembled and re-fixed. ' ' '
