NEW BIG LINER

BUILDING AT BELFAST

USE OF DIESEL ENGINES

Bolted Strric*. (iieceived 9th March, 10 a.m.)

LONDON, Bth March,

A remarkable,'development in marine engineering is fsftsfnadowed in' Lord Kylsant's announcement that oil engines may be employed to generate electric power in the White Star's new 60,000-ton liner now building at Belfast. "The Times" points ont that* if tho vessel should be driven by electrical power, in combination with motor engines, it will give British shipbuilding and marine engineering a triplo lead.. Not only will tho new vessel be tho largest ship afloat, but she will also have the largest installations of Diesel engines with electrical propulsion yet used at sea. The power required to drivel the vessel has not been definitely stated, but if, as likely, it exceeds 100,000 shaft horse-power, it means that the engines will be four times more powerful than those of tho Italian motor liner Augustus, which at present holds the record.
