GROSE AND OAKLEY

CHAMPION EIDERS MEET

Thrills in plenty were provided lor about 1500 spectators at the combined cycling and athletic -carnival held at- the Basin Reserve last evening under the auspices of the Port .Nicholson Amateur lload Cycling Club. Great interest was taken in the meeting of i\ Grose and T. Oakley, after the former's accident during the New Zealand championships, and in the invitation scratch cycle race, the two gave an exhibition of riding which roused the crowd to a high pitch of enthusiasm. Grose won the event by a wheel, but in the only other race in which lie met the champion, the pursuit race, Oakley turned the tables and won by a handsome margin. The Canterbury rider otherwise had matters all his own way, and easily accounted for the opposition in the ladies' bracelet handicap and the two miles scratch event. The cycling races were varied with athletic and novelty events, and there was no doubt that the spectators were fully appreciative .of the .well-arranged programme. All the events were got orf to time, and the management o£ the meeting reflected most creditably upon the officials concerned. Results:— CYCLING EVENTS. One Mile B Grade Cycle Handicap.—-First heat: G. Staveley (10yds), 1; E. Bellman (scr), 2: S. K. Forsyth (25yds), 3. Time, 2 mm 23sec. Second heat: C. Krickson (scr), 1; L Beero (30yds), 2; G. Piunti (70yds), 3. Time, 2min 27 3-ssec. Third heat: P. Doherty (60yds), 1; P. Sutherland (10yds), 2; W. O'Neil (25yds), 3. Time, 2min 2ti 2-ssec. Final: P. Sutherland, 1; E. Bellman, 2; C. Erickson, 3. Time, 2min 21 2-ssec. One Mile Invitation Scratch Cycle Race.— F. Groso (Chrlstchurch), 1; T. Oakley (Wairarapa), 2; M. Gane, 3. Won by a wheel. Groso did not show up until entering the straight in the last lap. Then he challenged Oakley, and the two rode out a desperato finish, the Canterbury man prevailing by a wheel. Gane, who was always up with the leaders, finished in third place, a similar distance away. Time, 2min 22 3-ssec. Boys' Cycle Race.—Dudley Bland, 1; Slurray Carncross, 2. 440 Yards Open Cycle Handicap.—Heat winners: L. Butler (10yds), C. Flett (scr), C. Erickson (15yds), It. Killick (20yds), A. Two Miles Cycle Pursuit Race—T. Oaltley (Wairarapa), 1; F. Grose (Chrlstchurch), 2: M. Oane (Wellington), 3. The only starters. Oakley rode a well-judged race, his time, 4mln 46sec, being an excellent performance lor an unpaced event. Won by 150 yards. Three Miles B Grade Scratch Cycle Itaco.— C. Erickson, .1 j P. Sutherland, 2; L. Bcerc, 3. Won by. half a length, a length between second and third. Time, 7min 42scc. Sealed lap prizes wero won by'G. Staveley (2), L, Beero, and P. Sutherland. ■ One Mile Ladles' Bracelet Cycle Handicap.— First heat: F. Grose, Chrlstchurch (scr), 1; J. Carswell (15yds), 2; A.'Crighton (70yds), S. Time. 2mln 22sec. Second heat: L. J.
