PRISONERS SENTENCED
Prisoners were sentenced by Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday) afternoon.
Charles Weir, who was found guilty, oa Thursday afternoon of indecent assault qa • a female child, was sentenced to sis months' imprisonment with hard labour.
His Honour said he was satisfied, that ' y the jury was perfectly right in coming toi, the conclusion that Weir had indecency in! his mind when he committed the offence. Referring to the plea made by. counsel for • . Weir (Mr. C. fiain) for probation, Bis Honour said that it was impossible '■. in such a case to grant probation. Small children must be protected, and it'was'ia the public interests that a man who deliberately interfered with innocent children should be punished. ■ In the case of John Moore M/Kinder* who had pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and theft at Wadestown, his Honour said that housebreaking was a serious crime and could not be dealt with lightly. The prisoner had been previously convicted on several occasions for minor offences, it was true, but the police; report about him was very unsatisfactory, and they; looked upon him as a dangerous criminal. He would be sentenced to two. years' im» prisonment with hard labour. . .
