THE BROUGHTON CASE

(To the Editor.) \ Sir,—Careful perusal of the president of the Society for the Protection of Women and .Children, Mrs. M. H. . Chatfield's statement contained,.in a footnote to my letter of the Ist February, does not reveal information of the points raised in the ■ letter signed "Charlotte A." Henderson," to which I made reference. The president states: "That the ■ society saw no reason for making explanation of their reasonable and quite blameless position." Quoting from the "Evening Post" report of the Court nroceedings in the Broughtori case,, Mr. Scott, Broughton's counsel said, "It was not Mr. Brbughton who set the ball rolling. The complaint came from a well known social worker whose name stood high in the community." May I suggest to Mrs. M. H. Chatfield and other members of ttie executive the advisability of offering through the columns of the Press a brief apology for the action of their secretary in communicating with tlie Mount Cook Police Station.—l am, etc.,

PHYLLIS ,J. HYLTON,

[This letter waR shown to the president of the society, who states, that the secretary attended at the hearing of the case before the Magistrate, and through the society's counsel stated that,, if, the Court desired to clear up any-point about her conversation with the police, she was prepared to give evidence, as she had said nothing at all about asylums or Mrs. Broughton's mental condition to the., police. The Magistrate said he saw no' reason for calling the secretary. The society has no cause to reproach itself. As its affairs are confidential, it does not intend to disclose conversations in the public newspapers. It attended the inquiry before the Magistrate, and is. quite prepared to give all information to any proper authority.] :
