AT HAWERA

YOMA'S EGMONT CUP

REREMOANA BEATEN

(By Telegraph from "Vedette.)

Yoma scored a popular victory in. the Egmont Cup yesterday, running from first to last in the short straight with a great finishing run. He accidentally interfered with Rapine about a furlong from home, but it made no difference to the result. The.Campfire gelding scored with the same dash! exhibited at Trentham, and again his dividend was a good one, but only about a third of the bumper one at Wellington. A Taranaki horse also carried off the Nolan Cup in the Australian-bred filly Llanore, who ran a line race in the Douro Cup at Treutham. She was handled in capital style, by H. Goldfinch. After the race Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., presented the trophy to the owner, Mr. A. Alexander.

On the rather small and turning course there was a fair amount of interference, especially in the closing stages of races and in the early part of the Nolan Cup. Horses affected were Valprc, Vertigern, Rapine, Rercmoana, Gold Dawn, Acred, Gasnapper, King Midas, Seastar and Calamine. Rnpine had a leg cut, which may cause a temporary stoppage of his activities and a cancellation ot further racing on the circuit. Knightlike was also cut about the legs. He won his race. Jefferd is doubtful about both of them.

There was an attendance up to last •year's standard, with quite a good sprinkling of visitors from as far south as Wellington.' The totalisator returns ■ were £22,357 10s, or £234 10s less than those of last year. Inquiries were held into the i various cases of interference, but it was established that all were due to accidental causes. Quite the feature of the day waa the success attending 'No. 5 on the tote., for those tickets failed only once to return .1 dividend, there being five firsts and . two seconds. But for being No. 5, possibly Coolmint would have been it a better price in the concluding event. OHAWE HURDLES. GlengarifE was favourite in an even bet■ting race. Abbott's Delight led down the straight from Asleep, Puwhero, lloyal ■ Acre, Atareria, and vivo. Asleep and Abbot's Delight still showed the way past the six furlong post to Atareria, Vivo, Royal Acre, Pnwhero, Glengariff, and Vexatious. Vivo took charge at the half mile from Atareria, Glengariff, Royal Acre, Vexatious, and Asleep. Glcngariff did best at the last fence, and showed out momentarily, but Polyphemus and Royal Acre both headed him, and then Vexatious came fnst to win by a length from Polyphemus, with Koyal Acre a head back third. Atareria was fourth, and then came . Glengariff, Vivo, Puwherr, and Asleep.

Vexatious finished much too well for the rest. Polyphemus was also going better at the end than at any other stage. Royal Acre looked a good thing beaten, for his inexperienced rider made a very poor showing. Atarcria, Vivo, and Gl«b--gariff looked like filling the places at the last fence; but they weakened, and Atareria stayed on the best. Old Puwhero outjumped everything in the race, and by the way he raced and was backed must have surprised his connections. Horomea was Bore, and tailed the field all the way. Asleep artd Abbot's Delight were beaten at the end of a mile. JUVENILE HANDICAP. . Valpre was backed down to a very short price, with Banket also solidly supported, Oallapat being at a liberal price. Potency began best from Callapat, Banket, Endorse, Valpre, and High Disdain. Calapat was soon in the lead, and showed the way to the turn from Banket, Endorse, High Disdain, Tenacrc. Callapat held off Banket in the run home, and won by a length. Tenacre was half a length back third, with High Disdain, Potency, Endorse, and Valpre, all well up, next. Camphos fell two furlongs from home. Callapat hung on very well, and fairly defeated Banket, who really had every chance. Tenacre is improving, and High Disdain, who looked decidedly burly, should soon lead a field home. Potency, who was always in the picture, is worth remembering. Endorse failed to run on over the last furlongs. Valpre appeared to strike trouble about two furlongs from the post, and lost a good position. TOKAORA HANDICAP. Knightlike was a pronounced favourite, with anything else at good odds. Miss Ransom showed out first from War Flame, Havering, Airway, Knightlike, Second Thought. Airway and Bione led to the turn from Second Thought, Knightlike, with Havering, Fortalice, and War Flame next. Knightlike and Havering joined Bione and Airway when lined up for home. Knightlike forged ahead to beut Havering by three quarters of a length. Fortalico was a head away third, just in front of Bione, with Second Thought, Ngawhire, and Joke Form next. Knightlike won rather comfortably, and should soon score again in similar company. Havering did not get such a good run as Knightlike, and registered a pood performance. Fortalice,,for a light weight, hung on very well. Biono also van a solid race. Second Thought was unlucky in the running, for he had to bo ridden hard in the early part to get a decent position, and then just weakened. Miss Ransom again showed disappointingly. Ngawhire, ■with 131b over-weight, finished on very well. EGMONT CUP. Vertigcrn was a £33 better favourite than Bright Glow, but it was a good betting race, with a pool of £3300. Star Area and Mendip led for a furlong from Blimp. Bright Glow, Vertigern, Yomu, Rapine, and-Hynanna. Blimp went up and joined Star Area in the load passing the stands, then in order coming Mendip, Bright Glow, Vertigern, and Rapine, with Yoma and Hynanna last. There was little change then until half a mile from home, when Hynanna made a fast run round his field to join Star Area and Blimp in front. As they swung into line for home Bright Glow, Rapine, and Mendip were all handy. Hynanna kept •up-his run and had taken charge about 100 yards from the post, but Yoma then put in his burst, which landed him a winner by half a length from Hynanna, with Bright Glow a similar distance back. Then, right up, almost in line, came Vertigern, Star Area, Mendip, and Rapine, with Blimp several lengths back. Yoma was perhaps* as well ridden an anything in the race and he came with a great run which was irresistible. Hud Mackie on Hynanna waited just a shade longer with his effort no doubt he would havo won. .Very possibly, of course, he rode as instructed. Anyway, it showed Hynanna is now back to his best, and

Yoniii confirmed his Wellington running. The decent pace set early proved just too much for Bright Glow, who weakened at the finish. Vertigern ran a good race with not a large amount of luck. Old Rapine ran a still improving race, being hampered a little. His turn is approaching rapidly. Star Area and Blimp were well beaten when the real business commenced, and Mcndip will soon do better over a slightly shorter course. The first half-mile was run in 53sec. FLYING HANDICAP.

Reremoana was backed down to very decided odds on, and Lady Quex was just as marked second choice. Lady Quex showed out first from Whenuanui, Te Atiawa, Keremoana, and Monaghan, Reremoana was squeezed back when two furlongs had ibeen covered, and Lady Quex bowled along in the lead to the turn, where Te Atiawa went wide with Monag han, and Keddar came through in the centre. Reremoana was a trifle late in getting clear, but had no chance, and Keddar was left to rim Lady Quex to a neck, with Reremoana three lengths back. Whenuanui and Monaghan followed at intervals.

Lady Quex ran right up to her reputation as a class sprinter, and really she gave this field no chance. Reremoana certainly received an interference run, but 1 Kccldiir came From behind him in. the straight, and beat him home. At tiie same time no horse, no matter how good, can suffer being pulled about with 10 stone on his'back. Whenuanui showed surprising pace. Te Atiawa and Monag- : han lost their chances by running wide at the turn. NOLAN CUP. Gold Cure at the finish of betting was a pronounced favourite, with Llanore and Miss Mercia almost equally backed, the pool being the good one of over £3300. Boundary, Gold Dawn, Llanore, Gold Cure, Acred, and Gasnapper began best, but on turning into the back straight Whisogne rushed to the front from Onward and Llanore, who were followed alter a gap by Gold Dawn and Gold Cure, with Boundary and^Limosa next. Acred moved up going to the turn, where the order was the same, and Whisogne, being beaten, fell back and interfered with Gold Dawn. Llanore came on in the centre to beat Home Made, who finished fast on the outside, by two lengths. Gold Cure was half a length back third, with Gasnapper, Gold Dawn, Onward, Whisogne. and Limosa next.

Llanore, from the outside, began very smartly, and finished exceptionally well. Possibly she was a trifle lucky, ,foi Gold Dawn, on the rails, was making a' great effort when.she had to be pulled right up to avoid the beaten Whisogne. The last-named showed great pace in the middle stages of the race. Gasnapper ran a decent race, for in some scrimmaging in which Boundary and Acred suffered in the first furlong, he too was cut right backhand then he finished on into fourth place. Gold Cure ran a fine race with his 9.3, but. was not quite good enough, while Home Made made a great effort over the last two furlongs to get second place. Onward was by no means disgraced, and should soon win in rather weaker company. Miss Mercia was never a possible winner. WHAREROA HANDICAP. King Midas was favourite, with good backing for Nucleus, Manly, Sea Star, and Orazono. Nucleus began best from Sea Star, Paul Lucerne, and Sovena. Manly took the lead at the six furlongs post from Nucleus, Sci Star, and Sovena, with Paul Lucerne, Bonhomme, and King Midas next. Manly led into' the straight clear of Nucleus, Sea Star, ami Paul Lucerne, with Bonhomme and King Midas next. King Midas put in a great effort in the run home, but failed to read) the post first, Nucleus winning by a neck, with Manly and King Midas a dead heat for Becond Orazono was right Tip fourth, with Bonhoimne and Sea Star next.

King Midas received all the ill-luck in tho race, and should have won; but Nucleus finished very well for nil that. Manly ran a fine race out in front, and stuck on well. Orazone came from last to fourth in the straight—an encouraging effort. Paul Lucerne was sore. Bonhomme and Sea Star ran- just fnir races. WAIPAPA HACK HANDICAP.

Coolmint was always favourite, with Vauclusc best backed of the rest in a good betting race. Coolmint began best from Green Acre, Airtight, Monsogne, and Miss Mercia, with Vaiicluse losing half a dozen lengths. Green Acre was clear across the top from Miss Mercia, Airtight Coolmint, Vauclusc, Monsogne, and Galamine. Green Acre turned for home just ahead of Miss Mercia, Airtight, Coolmint, and Calamine. Coolmint and Calamine drew out over the last bit, Coolmint beating Calamine by a length. Miss Mercia was a length away third, and then came Green Acre, Airtight, and Monsogne. Coolmint, always nicely placed, had just too much in reserve for Calaminc, who was giving the leaders a good start from the five-furlong post. Miss Mercia raced well for her second appearance. Green Acre showed pace. Viuicltise possibly wan n trifle unlucky, for he did well to the ;urn, after being left. Airtight was not good enough for this field.
