SLEDGE DOGS ARRIVE

DISLIKE OF TROPICAL HEAT

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. .Fifteen Alaskan sledge dogs to be used, by Commander Byrd in his Antarctic expedition arrived from Vancouver by tho Niagara to-day. They will bo shipped to Dunedin, where they, will bo transferred to the Eleanor Boiling. The dogs were in charge of Mr. A. lii-nis-Taylor, an experienced (log-driver and aviation pilot, who will accompany them to. the Antarctic aboard the Eleanor Boiling.

The difficulty of transporting the dogs through the varieties of climates

might be appreciated, when it was stated by Mr. Taylor that the heat of the tropics was almost too much for them. A special awning had to be placed over their quarters on the ship, and for days there were very few signs of life from them. However, their condition improved when Hearing the Dominion, and they were full of life on arrival.

The dogs' total value is about £400. The leader of the company is Skookum, a valuable Siwash Indian dog with a marked wolf strain.

Also aboard the Niagara was Mr. F. Wolfgang, a mechanic from the aeroplane manufacturing firm of Wright Brothers, who will proceed to tlio Antarctic to mechanically supervise the Wright 'planes with the expedition. Both nieii wove met by Mr. 11. Brophy, second in command of Ihe expedition.
