WELLINGTON REGATTA

ARRANGEMENTS MADE

Arrangements for the_ annual Wellington rowing regatta,' which is to be held on the harbour on 16th February, were carried a step further at a meeting of the Eegatta Club's committee held last night at the Star Bon ting Club. Mr. A. Whittaker presided over a good attendance.

The secretary reported that acting upon the instructions of the committee he lmd waited" upon - the Mayor (Mr. Q. . A. Troup), who had been good enough to undertake the- presentation of the Pearce and Bridson Cups. to?the successful competitors, in the seniorVand junior sculling races. The presentation is to be made at the Regatta Club's "Joy Night," to be held in the Town Hall on the night of the.regatta. ■ • ■ . A review of the financial position was given by the assistant treasurer, Mr. C. J. Mac Gibbon. The committee resolved to' undertake an energetic canvas of the city for donations to the funds. Several suggestions were made with a view to making the regatta financially self-support-ing, but ,none provided sufficient funds to overcome the great difficulty that always faces the governing bodies of the sport— the impossibility of obtaining a "gate." ■ The customary arrangements were made for the use of alternative courses according to the direction of the wind on regattu day. If the wind is from the south, the races are to be rowed across Oriental Bay to a finishing point off the end of the Taranaki Street Wharf, but if it is northerly the oarsmen will go to the Hutt ijoad course, rowing parallel to the Hutt road from about Ngahuaranga, and finishing near the Petone Woollen Mills. The city course is greatly to be preferred by the committee, for it offers the advantage of obtaining revenue from a steamer which it proposes should follow the races, but from the spectators pomt of view the Hutt road course is much bet6Although entries do not close for a i'ort- ! night, several members of the comniiti'tee had unofficial advice of crews and clubs likely to-be competing, and irom these the prospects of good fields were adjudged to be excellent. Local clubs will be represented in every race, and reports areto hand of prospective entries from clubs in the Marlborough, Wangamu, Canterbury, and Auckland districts.
