ESPERANTO CONFERENCE

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION FORMED

Delegates from various parts of the Dominion representing Esperanto groups aiid societies met in conference on Saturday afternoon in the Dominion Farmers' Institute to discuss the formation of a. New Zealand Association and fo consider the best means of introducing the language into the schools. Mr. C. J. Adeock, of Drury, Auckland, was the convener of the conference.

The following officers wero elected: President, Mr. C. J. Adeock; vice-presi-dents, Mr. L. E. Dust, Mr. J. S. Russell, Mrs. E. Watkins, and Mr. N. M. Bell; hon. secretary, Mr. W. 11. King; treasurer, Mr. E. C. Jack.

Tho objects of tho nc\v' association are as follows: To encourage the study and spread of the auxiliary international language Esperanto, especially by (a) Providing a directory of Eaperautists in tho Dominion to facilitate mutual acquaintance and encouragement; (b) encouraging tho founding of new groups and stimulating and assisting those already in existence; (c) holding wherever possible public meetings to expound the objects and claimß of Esperanto and to show the great public utility which must follow its adoption and use, thus seeking to awaken public opinion in its favour; (d) placing the evidence of tho advantages of the languago before. members of Parliament, educational authorities, business men, iind others who -occupy positions of influence; (c) supporting tho high aims of Esperanto as a medium for tho benefit of mankind by the removal of the language barriers between the nations.

In the evening a social meeting to welcome the delegates was held, under the auspices of the Wellington Esperanto Club, when there was present a largo number of members and friends. Mr. E. C. Jack presided. Supper was served and the following toasts were honoured: "The King," "Our Guests," "The Universal Esperanto Association and the British Esperanto Association," "The New Zealand Groups," and "The New Zealand Esperanto Association."
