CARNIVAL AT BATHS

NELSON, 28th January

Tho opening carnival of tho Nelson Amateur Swimming Club, held at the Municipal Baths on Saturday evening, was an unqualified success. Tho accommodation for onlookers was crowded to capacity, and the attendance of fourteen Marlborough competitors considerably increased the interest in 1 the events, especially the interprovincial relay race. Tho club looks forward keenly to having a Wellington representative team at some carnival in the near future. The bafis are in excellent condition, new and clean, and visiting competitors had nothing but praise 'for them. The men's relay race, won by Marlborough, was a matter of inches, the result being in doubt almost tili the touch. The local ladies' No. 1 team won the ladies' relay amidst loud applause. Excellent handicapping made for good finishes throughout, and the club and officials aro to kio congratulated for putting on a thoroughly enjoyable programme. Messrs. N. Kerr and H. Kitchingman were time-keepers, Mr. George Hogg starter, Messrs. A. Allan and H. C. Robertson hau- cappers, and Mr. E. Allan announcer.

At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day the annual statement of accounts presented showed that the excess of assets over liabilities was £5254 3s lOd. Tho chairman reported on the satisfactory result of n deputation to the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmorc' Ho said that he had been authorised to communicate with the owners of Warren's property with a 'view of acquiring four acres for a primary school in the Wood district, and .also six acres for "a new technical school. The Department also notified that a grant of £250 had been mado for improving the Auckland Point School grounds. Part of this work is now being carried out; the old clay playing aroa is in tho hands of the contractors and being asphalted.

The secretary to the board reported that Nelson still retained its good record in regard to Junior National Scholarships, of nine such, all but one being gained from tho primary schools. The senior inspector (Mr. 'Dalglish) expressed pleasure at the results, and read a most favourable. extract in regard to the Nelson district from a departmental report.

The following export arrangements for apples have been made so far:— Port Holjart, 11,100 cases, lltli-13tli February; Port Caroline, 13,000 ease,?, i-ith-17th February; Port Alma, 20,500 cases, 26th February-lst March; Hororata, 34,000 cases, Ist and 2nd March; Port Melbourne, 15,000 cases, 4th-6th March; lonic, . 33,100 cases, 9th-13th March.

There were over twenty applicants for teachers' positions at eaeli of 1 six seliools in the Nelson Education District.

There is a proposal that the local Swimming Centre will endeavour to get Arne Borg to make an appearance in Nelson. He is swimming in Wellington on 6th March, and if the Nelson boat on that evening were delayed it would be possible for him to do .%>. A visit from the Swedish champion would give a tremendous filip to swimming here, and it is to, "bo hoped that arrangements can bo made.

Owing to Friday this week being a holiday the late shopping night will bo on Thursday.
