UDY STREET, PETONE

(To tho Editor.) Sir,—-I read with interest the correspondence appearing in your paper on the IGtk I and 21st instant regarding extension of Udy street, Petone, and shall be glad if you will also permit me space to add a few remarks. All three correspondents have thought of the financial side of the question and, although 1 am inclined to favour the views of the Labour Council in. that respect, there is, however, one feature which all three writers have omitted to take into consideration, and that is the suitability of, the street to bo made a main traffic outlet, which it will eventually become if extended. It is at present too narrow, and its intersections, especially Nelsoa street, are far too dangerous. Not many months ago there were sis collisions at this corner in six days, and there is hardly a day goes past without someone getting into a scrape. Truth to tell, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. it is hardly sale for children to cross the road at this point. This statement can be verified by any nearby resident. Tho council is* fully aware of this dangerous corner as a notice board has been recently placed on a post. Hence, it will be seen that it is useless to place more traffic on Udy street by extending the street nnlesa it is widened and the visibility at all intersections improved. I think that it would be far more beneficial if the Petone Borough Council first made the street suitable for its present traffic before adding more.—l am, etc., OBSERVANT RATEPAYER.
