MANY BEQUESTS

THE LATE MRS. 1 JOSEPH AMES'S WILL

The late Mrs. Joseph Ames, of S4, Ellice street, Wellington, a well-known resident of many years standing, who died on 15th January, 1929, has made the following charitable bequests, after giving specific legacies .to a large number of relatives and friends:—

(1) To the Missions to Seamen at Wellington, £ 200.

(2) To the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, six pictures, and also £100 for the purchase of such work or works. of art as the council of the Academy may think fit. (3) To the Vicar for the time being of St. Mark's Church, Wellington, £.300, as a contribution towards the fund for erecting- the proposed Anglican Cathedral. (4) To the president and council of the Wellington Free Kindergarten School Association in trust for the Taranaki Street Free Kindergarten. £200. (5) To the Marsdeu School, Wellington, £200, to be invested to produce annual prizes to promote useful knowledge of general housework, housekeeping, and home life. (6) To the Anglican Church for mission work similar to that carried on in Wellington by the Bcv. Feilden Taylor, £150. (7) To Mother Mary Joseph Aubert's Homo for Incurables, Wellington, £150. (8) To the Wellington Society for Belief of. the Aged Needy, £200. (9) To the trustees of the Convalescent Home for Women, Oriental Bay, Wellington, £ 200. (10) To the governing body of the Wellington Residential Nursery, £150. (11) £400 to. the Board of Governors ',£or the time being of the Wellington Boys' and Girls' College, to be invested by the board, and the interest to bo used to found an annual scholarship to be awarded to a girl attending Wellington East Girls' College, who through any necessitous circumstances may be unable- to continue her education at the said school for a further period, and who on the recommendation of the principal of the said college is deemed to be most capable of using and benefiting by it to the fullest advantage. (12) To Dr. Barnado's Homo for Waifs, London, £100. : (13) To the Salvation Army, Wellington, £100. . ■ (14) To tho Alexandra Home, Wellington, £100. ■ . (15) £200 to the Vicar and Churchwardens for. the time being of St. .Mark's,, Church Day School, Wollington,.to be invested by them and the in-' terest to bo.'iised to purchase annually prizes to be known as '(The: Ames Memorial Prizes," such prizes to bo awarded for. Scripture and church attendances' in. the upper school. (10) To the Wellington. City Council for the purchase of' animals for the Wellington Zoo, £100. . Tho residuary estate, which should amount to at least £5000, is to be held upon trust for all time, and the income is to be paid annually to one;or more of tho following homes or institutions, in such shares and proportions as the trustee shall think.fit:— (a) Orphanages and other homes and institutions in the' Wellington district for poor and indigent children conducted by the Church of England; (b) homes and other institutions for tho care and welfare of aged or infirm persons of either sex by whomsoever conducted. It is the desire of the late Mrs. Ames that her trustee shall, so far as he reasonably can, arrange the distribution ;f the annual income of her residuary estate so that the inmates of such orphanages, homes, and institutions will be ablo to enjoy tho benefits of such income at Christmas time.

Prior to her.death the late Mrs. Ames gave the gates which now givo access to the AVellington East Girls' College, and also gavo £100 towards tho Dominion National Art Gallery. By tho provisions .of tho will, the Public Trustee is executor and trustee and Mr. Douglas Jackson, solicitor, Wellington, is Advisory trustee to tho P'tblic Trustee.
