FLYING JULIET'S CUP,

VALLAR WINS THE STEWARDS (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, 26th January. Delightful weather favoured the opening o£ the Takaimna Jockey Club s Summer Meeting to-day and there was some interesting racing. Four favourites m The Begum, Tidal, Polyxena, and VaUar, were successful, "and the other winners were also fairly well backed. The consistent Flying Juliet .won the Takapuna Cup practically from end to end, with Prodice and Royal DouTton in the places. Vallar scored very easily in the sprint, and had the measure o£ his opponents from the first furlong. The Takanini trainer J. T. Jamieson had a successful day with three wins and two thirds, his winners being High Finance, Tidal, and Polyxena, who were all piloted by H. Goldfinch. The totalisator handled £41,704, compared with £45,394 on the corresponding day last year. TRIAL STAKES. For the Trial Stakes The Begum was favourite at a fair price, with Sir Moml next in request, and several of the others also decently supported. The inside horses, Arihana and Parfait Amour, moved first, to give way along the back to The Begum and Bold Archer. The Begum just led Bold Archer into the straight, with Prince of Orange and Roman Pearl showing up on the outside, and Sir Mond, Princess Rain, and Steadfast handy

on the iriner. In the run home The Begum went on to win well by a length from Sir Mond, who beat Bold Archer by a head. Iloman Pearl was fourth, with Prince of Orange and Arihana next. Bold Archer showed fine speed from the extreme outside and should soon win. Prince of Orange and Land Measure are also likely improvers. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Nine started in the Orewa Highweight Handicap, and Glena Boy was a firm favourite, with Ripon Abbey and Bizarro next in request. Kipon Abbey made most of the running and led into the straight from Glena Boy, Bizarro, Royal Form, and Always. In a good finish Ripon Abbey stayed on to win by three parts of a length from Royal Form, who finished well to boat Glena Boy by a neck. Bizarro was fourth, with Always and Zircon next. Royal Form, made his effort a trifle too late, otherwise he may have won. Glena Boy had every chance, but may do better over the longer distance on the second J>" ZEALANDIA HANDICAP. For the Zealandia Handicap Jolly Money was a solid favourite, with High Finance and Macroom also in demand. High Finance hopped out smartly from the inside, and led early from Macroom and Jolly Money. Rounding the bend High Finance was still in charge, with Macroom and Ti Tree in close attendance, Master O'Rorke and Jolly Money also being bandy. High Finance was not troubled at the finish to win by over a length from her stablemate Ti Tree. Jolly Money was a neck away third, and Macroom fourth. Then came Master O'Rorke and Hipo. High Finance had too much pace for the'opposition and was never off the bit. Ti Tree went a good race and should soon improve. Jolly Money will also do better shortly, as he had not done much work in the past few weeks.

TAKAPUNA CUP. There was good wagering on the Takapuna Cup, and the Prodice-Desert Glow bracket was in slightly more demand than Transformer. Flying Juliet and Eager Rose attended to the pace-making, with Prodice, The Lover, and Hyde Park handy. Flying Juliet led into the straight from Eager Rose, Prodice, Royal Doulton, and Desert Glow. Flying Juliet battled on in good style at the finish, and won by a length from Prodice, who beat Royal Doulton by three parts of a length. Eager Rose was fourth, followed by The Lover, Hyde Park, and Transformer. Flying Juliet slowed the field down early and led practically throughout. Prodice had every chance, and went a solid race, and likewise Royal Doulton, who should do better at a shorter distance. Eager Rose made a creditable showing for a first attempt in open company, while Hyde Park and The Lover were prominent to the turn. Desert Glow and Transformer were never dangerous. FERRY HANDICAP. British. King was favourite for the Ferry Handicap, and there was also heavy support for Mussie and Owairaka. Hone .Heke and .Glenstar began best to lead along the back from Mussie, Quinsilia, and British King. Glenstar drew out slightly at the top and was first into the straight from Te Money, who had run up smartly, British King, Mussie, and Hone Heke. Glenstar held his' own at the finish to win by a head from Te Money. Palmares was half a length away third, and Mussie right up fourth. ■ Nest to finish were Quinsilia and British King. Glenstar is steadily, on the improve and won nicely. Te Money was riot too well placed early, and Mussie was unlucky in the run home. She was finishing on. British King had every chance and faded at the end. Cybele gave trouble at the post and was left behind the field. CALLIOPE HANDICAP. Polyxena was an odds-on favourite for the Calliope Handicap, nearly three times as well backed as the second fancy, Gemlight, who was only slightly better fancied than Royal Finance. Currajong, Fraser. and Polyxena began quickest, Polyxenn c leading into the straight from Pellettc, Fraser, Gemlight, and Royal Finance, who were across the course almost in line, with Tasty handy on the rails. Once straightened up, Polyxena went on to score I>j

a neck from Royal Finance, with Tasty two aud a half lengths away third. Carl Idem was fourth, followed by Gemlight and Beiiie. ' " ■ The winner wou well, but Koyal Finance was unlucky and covered a good deal of ground on the outside. After being slow to begin, Tasty shaped fairly. Gemlight will benefit by the race, and may do better next time. HAURAKI HACK HANDICAP. Eight runners paraded for the Hauraki Hack Handicap, and Tidal was backed down to a short price, with Star Comet and Arikitoa also in demand. Salamander made the early running from Arikitoa, Exalted, and Brampton, with Tidal last. With six furlongs to go Tidal began to move through, and at the top he was in second position behind Arikitoa. Rounding the bend Arikitoa just led Brampton and Tidal, who were clear of Exalted and Star Comet. Once they began the home run Tidal asserted his superiority and came on to beat Brampton 'by half a length, Star Comet being a length and a half away third. Arikitoa was fourth, and Exalted a moderate fifth.. Tidal romped in and outclassed the opposition at the finish. Brampton made a solid showing, but Arikitoa failed at the finish after being in front at the turn. STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Vallar was the hottest favourite of the day for the Stewards' Handicap, being nearly £830 better fancied than the second choice, Lady's Boy. Vallar soon ran to the front from Lady's Boy and Melissa, and so they raced to the turn. In the run home Vallar easily withstood a challenge from Lady's Boy and scored by a length. Lorient 11., finishing on, was a length away third, aud Melissa fourth. . ' ■ ' Vallar is good and fully justified the confidence reposed in him. Lady's Boy made a game effort, but met one that was too good. Lorient 11. was last early, and his finishing effort was good enough to indicate something better shortly. Ruffles should also be seen to greater advantage in the near future. Results:— Trial Stakes, of 250' soys; weights S.O; seven furlongs.—l Tho Begum (Cotton), 1; 2 Sir Jlond (C.
