THE WELLINGTON LEAGUE
An emergency meeting of the Wellington Chess League was held in the rooms of the Working Men's Club at 5.15 p.m. on Wednesday, Mr. F. J. Brooker (vice-pre-sident) being in the chair. Messrs. S Faulknor, J. A. Glasgow, G. A. Hurley, J!. ii. Kellmg, and C. W. Tanner (hon ' secretary, New Zealand Chess Association) were also present. Mr. S. Faulknor (hon. secretary) preseuted a report on the 38l!i championship tournament of New Zealand, which was recently held in this city, and Mr. J. A. Glasgow (hon. treasurer) submitted the balance-sheet of the tourney, showing that there will be a credit balance after all ' liabilities have been met. The report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously, the opportunity being taken to express appreciation of the good work done by these two officers m carrying out the congress so successfully It was decided to send letters of thanks to the umpire (Mr. G. A. Jones, of Joluisonville), ( to the Education Board for the. use of the board room), and to the Working Men's Club (for tickets of mera- ■ bership). Mr. W. E. Mason, of Wellington, was appointed to award the two special prizes of the recent congress viz the Brilliancy and Best Recovery Prizes It was decided to open the 1929 season on the Saturday after Faster (6th April) with the usual territorial match, "North" y. '•'South.'" The arrangements for holding this big sides match, which generally attracts more than a hundred players, are in the hands of. Messrs. Brooker, Faulknor, and Kelling. In order that His Worship the Mayor may present the various club and league prizes during the refreshment interval, clubs are being asked to get all outstanding tourney games played off as quickly »s possible. Play in the league's current- "Champion of Champions" contest, which has got into arrear, is also to bo expedited.
