FAST CYCLING

F. GROSE IN FORM

ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS

SATURDAY'S MEETING

It is the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre's desire to provide as attractive sports programmes as possible, catering for the public with something special and at the same time providing local competitors with better competition. With this end in view the centre, for its electric light fixture at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night, invited two champion cyclists, 1?. Grose (Canterbury) and T. Oakley (Wairarapa), to take part, and that the presence of these two noted riders was appreciated was shown by the interest taken by the crowd of 2000 in their every appearance on the track. Both provided thrills, but jn particular Grose, who was riding brilliantly. While, of course, the centre was decidedly fortunate in having a line evening for the meeting, it was a pity that the air was so keen. However, competitors made the best of matters; perhaps the keen wind even keyed some of them up a fraction more than usual. At any rate, performances right through were good, with several outstanding and very fine achievements. PACED CYCLE EVENTS. Cycle, races now play no small part at sports gatherings in Wellington. Not only was the meeting on Saturday night notable for the appearance of two cycling champions from other parts, but also for the introduction in two of the cycle events of pacemakers. It was an innovation in Wellington. In the first of the races in which pacemaking was tried it worked well, but there was not the same success in the other race, the three miles scratch; in fact, arrangements did not run at all smoothly, but that was due seemingly to the local riders' lack of experience of such racing. They failed to keep up with pacers like Grose and Oakley, who opened Up big gaps on them. With events such as. they were, Grose retired from the contest, but • Oakley ■ continued on and was a comfortable winner. GROSE APPLAUDED.

In the second heat of the first event in which he started—the 880 yards handicap —Grose gave the crowd a taste of his pace. He was conceding starts up to 80 yards, but from pistol fire he simply shot round the course, capping his ride oft' with a sterling finish and winning nicely. He had the crowd on their feet, and the applause as he sped to the finishing post showed their appreciation of the Now Zealand champion's splendid effort. Grose, with M. Gane, also rode well in the final, but over the last furlong they were pocketed, and were unable to ride into a place. The star event of the evening was the special paced match race over threequarters of a mile between Grose and Oakley, with J. Carswell as pacemaker. Here again Grose prevailed. Along the back straight in the last lap he drew past Oakley. The Wairarapa champion had no chance of catching Grose, who won by several lengths. In the one mile handicap Grose won a place in his heat, and was fourth.in the final., Oakley had the misfortune to fall in the second heat when G. Stavely 'came down.

ALL-ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP. Anct'-or feature of the cycling section was t!.o continuation of the Wellington all-round championship competition, for which, two races were held. At the commencement of the evening there was a special elimination challenge race in connection with this contest between J. Carswell and L. J. Pearce, the ex-Christ-church rider. Pearee was the winner. WITH THE ATHLETES. On the athletic side there was also much of interest and some first-class performances. A fine run was registered by the Selwyn Club man, W. Ogg, in the 880. yards A grade handicap, which he won from the 3yds mark in 2min 0 2-ssec. The two scratch men, C. B. Allan and E. Leech, finished out of a place, although the former was close up. Another fine effort was that of G. Bayne in winning the one mile handicap from 10 yards in 4min 30 4-ssec. Among the sprinters H. Le Grove was first to the' tape in the 100 yards handicap, and the University representative, E. B. Smith, was the winner of the furlong event.

The ladies' races as usual were very keenly contested, and the fields were good.

Just what an acquisition G. Kydbeek is to the Wellington Club was shown by ■lus performances in the discus event and the hop, step, and jump, both of which he won. Rydbeck did not compete in the , high jump, first place in which went to I<\ Brady, with a leap of sft 6%in. Other good contests were provided in the 440 yards A and B grade handicap events.
