OTAGO SWIMMERS

PROMISING JUNIORS

TWO RECORDS BROKEN

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

DTJNEDIN, This Day

Otago swimming circles arc jubilant over tlio groat 'performances put up by Ecggfo Geddes and Miss Maxinc Mathieson at the Kiwi Club's swimming carnival on Thursday night. The former, is a member of the Kiwi Club and the holder of till the Otago junior boys' free-style and brcaststroke records, and also is the New Zealand junior boys' 75 yards broaststroko champion. Ho made an attempt on the New Zealand Tticbrd for the 75 yards junior boys' bre'nststrblic! There is "no official record listed for fresh water for this event in the handbook, the best time itJias been won in fresh water at the championship being 6C 2-sscc. The best time ever put up for the' event in New Zealand, however, was that of Leslie Olds at Auckland ;i salt water in 1927, when ho svyam the distance in lmin 2 2-ssec. Geddes, however, went one better on Thursday night; for, swimming like a champion all the way, he finished very strongly and returned a time that three official watches agreed was 61sec. The club had applied to the centre for an attempt to be made, and an application will be made to the New Zealand Council for Geddes's great time to be recognised as the New Zealand fresh water record. In Wellington next month it is very likely that he will improve upon this time, and he is also regarded as having a big chance in the free-style events, especially over 220 yards. Geddes is only twelve, but ho liiled a gap in the club's polo team in the senior competition the other night and played a very sound game in goal. His second string in the free-style events at tho Otago championships is W. Jarvis, who won the 50 yards junior j handicap in 31 4-ssee and his heat in 30 4-ssec. Jarvis has a nine-year-old brother, S. Jarvis, who is one of the greatest littlo swimmers for his .age Otago has ever had. He was second in the 33 1-3 yards interclub handicap at this carnival, having six seconds start. His heat he won in the actual time of 23 2-ssec, very fast' swimming for his dge. He has a beautiful stroke, and givesgreat promise of big things-in the future if he is not pushed too hard.

Miss 'Mathieson made a' successful attempt on the record for the 75 yards intermediate , girls' . breaststroke, for which the record was 66 2-ssec for, fresh water.' Miss Mathieson was accompanied on the first part of her journey by Geddes, and she, too, finished fast on her own, her time being lmin 5 4-5 see. The'times were put in under official conditions, and an application will be made by the Otago Centre for the time to be recognised as a record. The referee of the meeting was J. L. M'liidoe, president of the Otago Centre, and he has certified that everything is in order. .' . . . .

Roy Calder won the fancy diving handicap at the carnival on Thursday. He was giving away up to seven points in handicaps. Calder is diving exceptionally well just now, and the Otago supporters will not hear of his defeat in the men's dive in'Wellington,.and Miss D. Foote is: regarded as having a good chance in the ladies' : dive.. Miss L. however, is a finished little diver, and in .her,.'Hawkes Bay has a sure point-getter. ■' : \ .,:-;. .. .. , ■.-: . ,! ..
