■■■<$■ - ■ * ■ ■■ >.Forming :i somewhat strange contradiction to the general theory, that money is the most guarded of all material possessions, there are no fewer than 79 names in the "Gazette" "of persons who have failed to claim deposits in four New Zealand banks. The total sum. represented by this apparent, neglect is. £1857, the, four institutions concerned being the Union Bank of-Aus-tralia, the National Bank of New Zealand, the Bank of Australasia, and the Bank of New Zealand. ■ '. There, is always., a certain interest attached to unclaimed money, whether it be in a bank or part of an estate. Thoae whoso bank accounts arc always the subject of careful scrutiny may find it difficult to believe that one Auckland man has left £673 in the National Bank on fixed deposit for a long enough period to qualify his savings for a 'place in the unclaimed list.

-The annual lists of unclaimed money in New Zealand banks are made compulsory by the Unclaimed Moneys Act, 1908. Lists of all accounts not operated on by the owner for six years must be supplied by the banks to the Government each January for publication in the "Gazette." All unclaimed siims not paid within two years of the first publication in the "Gazette" must be paid to the Government for the use of the public revenue.. However, substan-. t.iated claims may still result in a return of previously unclaimed amounts to owners.

Names of persons from every part of the country appear in the latest lists Issued by the banks. Sums awaiting owners range from £673 to lid. Several persons with fairly substantial deposits are given as living in Auckland. One man, whose address is given as Grey Lynn, has not .claimed a sum of 'over £50 since 1021, while a labourer whoso address is gazetted as -Bayswate* has £106 to his credit.
