PETROL TAX
A BIG COLLECTION
WELLINGTON'S SHARE
' Details of the October-December collection of petrol tax and the manner of its distribution were made available by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) in a statement to the Press yesterday-afternoon. ' .
For the period from Ist October to 31st December, said the Minister, the petrol tax collected' totalled £206,839 11s lOd. After deducting from the total given the, amount of refunds, cost of administration, and the Customs Department's charges for collections, there was a balance of £193,160 15s sd, of which sum 92 per cent.—£177,707 18s 2d —would be paid to the Main Highways Eevenuo Fund, while the remaining 8 per cent., representing £15,452 17s 3d, would be availablo for distribution among the boroughs and cities with •, a population of 6000 "and ,over.
The Motor Spirits Taxation Act, tlic Minister added, provided that the 8 per cent. ■ should be apportioned in. amounts bearing to each other approximately the same proportion as existed for the time being between the populations of .the several boroughs.' A certified list of populations had been obtained from ■ the ■ Government Statistician, and in accordance with it some twenty-five places would participate in the distribution.
Wellington, which tops tho list, receives £2512. Other allocations of interest are: Gisbornc £329,' Napiyr £357, Hastings £259, New Plymouth. £361, ' Wauganui £.602, Palmerston North £408, Masterton £204, Lower llutt £201, Pctone £248, Nelson £253, Auckland £2458, Christchurch' £2110, Dunedin £1613.
