Comparative returns for 1927 and 1928 show that in the Wellington district tho number of bankruptcies last year were two less than in the previous year, the actual number being 132 ir- 1925, as against IS4 in 1027. O£ these 182, 05 were failures-of residents in Wellington, the remainder being from Wanganui, Palmerstou North, Dannevirkc, Wairarapa, Pahiatua, and Taihapo. Tljcsu bankruptcies involved liabilities of a -tut.il of £.10,335, nearly £20,000 more than the liabilities of the 19-7 failures. Dividends to the amount of £12,877 were paid out, ex. eluding preferential claim and secured creditors.
Of the 182 failures, seven were for £50 or under, 20 between £SO and £100, 49 between £100 and £250, 40 between £250 and £500, 27 between £500 and £1000, IS between £1000 and £2000, 16 between £2000 and £5000, and 5 for £5000 or moru. A sign of ' the better . times for the man on tho land ia the fact that in 1927 farmers headed tho list of the occupations of the bankrupts, numbering 32. In 1928 they dropped to second place with 29, labourers (2G) taking first place. A great variety of occupations, including those of "gentleman" and inventor, is represented ou the list.
